Engineering Website News

July 31, 2007

Each month we search through the Internet Resources Newsletter to bring you the pick of engineering-related sites. Just two to offer you this month, but don’t forget to take a look through our archive for previous ‘best bits’ from the Newsletter.

SubsTech SubsTech is an open knowledge source in materials engineering. It is free to use and allows you to view and edit existing articles or add your own. It contains a wide range of articles covering metals, ceramics, polymers, composites and fluids. http://www.substech.com/

Virtual Engineer Virtual Engineer at http://www.virtual-engineer.net/ is “a Search Engine and Community Portal for Engineers and other Professionals working in the Building and Construction Industries”.  It also proclaims to have “The Best Links on the Web for Engineers and other Professionals working in the Building and Construction Industries” – why not take a look and see if it justifies the hyperbole!

PEP introduce Engineering Open Choice – Good news or money for nothing?

July 24, 2007

Engineering Open Choice logo“Professional Engineering Publishing, publishers to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, have launched a new open access service for the engineering community called Engineering Open Choice.  Engineering Open Choice gives authors the option of having their published research made available free to anyone throughout the world, on an open access basis. The service is available to authors of all papers accepted for publication, upon payment of a standard fee. ” (PEP, 2007)

The bad news is that the standard fee is £1,700 + VAT.  However, if you sign the PEP’s Licence to Publish form rather than their Copyright Assignment form, you can self-archive your refereed papers for free on Loughborough’s Institutional Repository, achieving the same end result.

For more information on the Institutional Repository, please contact your Academic Librarian.
